Smoke Readers

The Smoke Readers are volunteers who are trained and certified to recognize and understand visible emissions from smokestacks, what violations look like, and how to file reports.  Smoke reading is an excellent way for citizens to take action in their own communities by reading the facilities that are of concern to them.  Past readings by our volunteers have led to fines levied against polluters and even changes in the operation of facilities.

The training is provided free of charge by GASP (made possible by the Allegheny County Health Department) and takes place every six months.  The next training is scheduled for April 7-9, 2015 and is conducted by Eastern Technical Associates.

Smoke Readers, be sure to use www.suncalc.net before you head out to a new spot, to check where the sun will be to ensure you are making valid readings.
