Side Street Strolls
2nd Saturdays of April, June, and August, 2011
1-5 PM
GASP is partnering with Venture Outdoors to lead leisurely 3-4 mile strolls through three different areas of Pittsburgh (South Side Flats, Strip District, and East End). Leave the pollution of the highways and walk the byways, and discover hidden gems tucked in out-of-the-way lanes. Restaurants, shops, historical sites, unique architecture, and green projects will all be part of each stroll.
Call Venture Outdoors at (412) 255-0564, extension 0, or visit their website to learn more and sign yourself up. GASP members can get the Venture Outdoors members price–call or click GASP today to become a member.
Strolls #1 and #2 were great successes. The weather cooperated and we had about twenty strollers for each hike oohing and aahing their way around the South Side and the Strip District. South Side stops included Bedford Square, City Theatre, Riverside Mews, Conservation Consultants Inc. Center, Morning Glory Bed and Breakfast, and Green Building Alliance, as well as many more shorter stops at sites of historical and architectural interest. Thanks to Big Dog Coffee for cookies and delicious coffee, and thanks to all for coming out for Stroll #1. Scroll below for a few pictures.
In the Strip District, we went from one end of the neighborhood to the other. We hiked along the water, looked inside old St. Patrick’s Church, visited the Society for Contemporary Craft, and got a detailed look behind the scenes of the Pittsburgh Opera, the nation’s only LEED opera (Operations and Maintenance category). Big thanks to Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor for the treats.
