Group/Team/Coach Tip Sheet

Groups of those who exercise outside can minimize their exposure to pollution by following these tips:

  • Schedule practices or meetups for the early morning or early evening when pollution levels are generally lower.  Read our blog here which explains this topic in-depth.
  • Avoid congested streets or other sources of emissions. The more traffic there is, the more pollution you’ll be breathing. Take a side street–even if it’s only one block away, it’ll make a big difference.  Read an introductory article to this topic here.
  • Stay away from sources of pollution when practicing.  If school buses are lining up near one end of your field, move to the other end.
  • Alter your activity on Air Quality Action days.  Coaches, have lessons ready for classroom learning when air quality is poor.
  • Nasal breathing is helpful in filtering out larger particles of pollution before they enter your lungs.  Much more on this topic can be found here.
