City of Pittsburgh Waste Haulers

Retrofitting waste haulers has a positive impact on the health of people who live and work along municipal garbage routes, the truck operators themselves, and residents in the greater Pittsburgh area.

An initial retrofit project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated 13 garbage trucks with diesel particulate filters, approximately 15% of the city’s fleet of waste haulers. Additional funding provided by the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the EPA in 2009 allowed most of the rest of the City’s waste haulers to be retrofit by the end of 2010.
