While GASP has focused its environmental watchdog efforts primarily in the Pittsburgh region, we extended our advocacy footprint to Erie in 2019. The move came after a newly formed community group—Hold Erie Coke Accountable—reached out and asked for help in efforts to do just as their name states: Keep Erie Coke accountable for environmental violations that happen at their lakeside facility.

To help in this endeavor, GASP secured a grant through the Black Family Foundation and also received funding from several generous community members.

Since then, GASP has worked closely with HECA to inform the Erie community about air quality issues in general, as well as Erie Coke’s history of environmental violations.
