Environmental Health Manager

Position Summary

 

GASP is seeking a passionate and experienced Environmental Health Manager to develop and lead initiatives that bridge environmental health research, regulatory advocacy, and community-driven activism. This position will focus on studying the public health impacts of air pollution, engaging with community groups to address environmental injustices, and advocating for stronger environmental protections. The successful candidate will enhance GASP’s legal and regulatory efforts by integrating them into a broader public health framework, emphasizing the societal determinants of health.

 

Key Responsibilities

​

• Develop a research agenda on air pollution’s impact on community health, utilizing air sensors, GIS spatial analysis, and community-driven data collection.

• Lead public health advocacy initiatives to achieve cleaner air and reduce exposure to airborne toxins in Pittsburgh and the Mon Valley.

• Engage with frontline communities and environmental justice groups, to amplify their concerns and provide scientific and regulatory support.

• Collaborate with policymakers, regulatory agencies, and legal teams to advocate for stricter pollution controls and enforcement measures.

• Produce accessible reports and educational materials to inform community members about air pollution’s health risks and empower them to take action.

• Strengthen partnerships with grassroots organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania. • Bridge the gap between traditional environmental nonprofits and newer activist groups.

 

Qualifications

 

• Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in public health, environmental science, epidemiology, urban planning, or a related field.

• Experience in community-based research, environmental justice advocacy, or public health policy.

• Familiarity with air pollution monitoring techniques, GIS mapping, and health impact assessments.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and regulatory information into accessible materials for the public.

• Experience working with diverse communities, particularly frontline and historically marginalized groups.

• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with legal teams, scientists, policymakers, and grassroots organizations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Background in environmental law, regulatory compliance, or legislative advocacy.

• Experience with grant writing and fundraising for community-based research and advocacy efforts.

• Familiarity with Pennsylvania’s environmental regulatory framework and air quality challenges.

 

Compensation & Benefits

​

• Salary: $45,000 - $60,000 (based on experience and qualifications)
