GASP Turns 50!

This year marks 50 years since the Group Against Smog and Pollution started fighting for cleaner, healthier air in southwestern Pennsylvania.

From our roots as an all-volunteer led organization, we have grown to have seven paid staff, including two full-time attorneys. In these past five decades we’ve worked tirelessly and accomplished a lot, including reviewing and commenting on hundreds of air quality permits, regulations, and policies, and educating tens of thousands of residents about air quality issues.

We’ve fought for clean air in communities throughout Southwestern PA, writing countless letters to the editor, speaking at public hearings, and serving on numerous regional committees and boards advocating for improved air quality.

By providing citizens with tools and guidance, we’ve encouraged them to take a stand for cleaner, healthier air.

Believe it or not, GASP has been around longer than the Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Join Us for Our 50th Anniversary Celebration

Our work today is as important as when we first started. Remaining strong and relevant for 50 years is no small task. It’s time to celebrate our accomplishments and this momentous occasion.

GASP will be celebrating this special occasion at the historic Rodef Shalom Congregation in Oakland from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Guests will enjoy live music, food and drinks, and a silent auction, followed by the Michelle Madoff Award of Environmental Excellence Ceremony.

Will you join us?

The Michelle Madoff Award of Environmental Excellence

Historically and today, women have played a central role in GASP’s success. GASP began as a concerned citizen group, with many women serving as founders and leaders throughout the history of our organization.

Because of our legacy of strong women, our 50th Anniversary Celebration will pay tribute to contemporary women of southwestern Pennsylvania currently acting as authorities in the environmental community.

During 2019 we will be asking the community to nominate women in various environmental fields to receive the Michelle Madoff Award of Environmental Excellence, named for our founder and first president.

Pittsburgh Needs GASP and GASP Needs YOU

While there have been improvements over the past 50 years, air pollution remains a significant public health concern, especially in our region. Research indicates that Pittsburgh’s annual particle pollution ranks among the worst 12 percent of urban areas monitoring in the United States.

Allegheny County is in the top 1 percent with respect to cancer risk from industrial sources.

Our air pollution levels also put us at risk for increased levels of asthma, COPD, stroke, and pregnancy complications such as low birth weight and premature birth.

Negative effects of air pollution can be felt on the economy, as well as on human and environmental health. Our reputation for poor air quality may be a deterrent for companies looking to move to the region, and graduate students and young professionals transitioning into the workforce.

The education, advocacy, policy-making, and legal work that GASP does helps to alleviate some of these issues. In the past year we’ve:

  • analyzed the permit backlog at the local and state level
  • fought to preserve the Allegheny County’s Clean Air Fund
  • Urged the Allegheny County Health Department to do more to reduce hydrogen sulfide odors
  • launched a new air quality podcast
  • and put on a summer camp for middle schoolers
